Born March 13, 1950 in Schwerin;
married, 3 daughters.
1968 high-school graduation.
1968-1971 military service in the NVA
(National People's Army).
1971-1976 attended the Institute for
International Relations in Potsdam-Babelsberg, field of study: foreign
affairs.
Dissertation A in 1979, dissertation
B, habilitation in 1986, recently assistant professor and chair in the
field of European security and disarmament.
1976-1989 academic collaborator at
this institute.
1990 to 1999 and 2004 campaign
director for the PDS, and temporarily acting federal chairman of the PDS
(party of democratic socialism) and until 1997 chairmen of the PDS-basic
policy commission organized in the federal association of the party of the

Member of the European parliament
since 1999.
Member of the labor union, IG Metall,
founding member of the federal foundation Rosa Luxemburg and the Childrens
foundation, member of the European-Union Germany, the Association for the
United Nations and the steering group of the Dialogue of Petersburg.
Author of academic as well as popular texts in foreign affairs and
security policy, cabaret-texts, aphorisms, and satire. Recent
publications "Nur die nackte Wahrheit geht mit keiner Mode" (Only the
naked truth goes with no fashion), Eulenspiegel Verlag 2000 and
"Aufbegehren zwischen Scherz und Zorn. Bagdad-Porto Alegre-New
York-Bagdad" (Rebellion between fun and anger), edition NORDWINDPRESS 2003
