Sharp criticism of the environmental policy of the EU and by the
German Council presidency European deputy André Brie demands
“new thinking” in Brussels and Berlin
German climate killers
Before the background of the UN climate report, the European
deputy André Brie (Left Party) has sharply criticised the
environmental policy of the EU. “The current German double head
consisting of Council president Merkel and industrial
commissioner Verheugen turn out to be climate killers”, Brie
declared on Friday in Schwerin. “With the turning down of
stronger CO2 norms for cars, Verheugen and Merkel do not only
infringe against stipulations in the programme of the German
council presidency, but mainly against the law of reason. The
report by the UN climatic council proved again that the climate
changes are mainly caused by the CO2 emissions”, thus the deputy.
Brie in this context pointed to the fact that already today it
could be seen that the EU won’t reach the planned reduction of
emissions of hothouse gases. The self-obligation of the car
industry for lowering CO2 emissions has not been kept. “Europe
has a catch-up need in many areas, be it now in the matter of
transport policy, the encouragement of environment-friendly
energy sources or the increase in energy efficiency.” At the
same time, the emission trade as well had to be aligned in such
a way that it served climate protection and not the economic
interests of the capitalists, the politician continued. “That
will only happen, however, if leading politicians in Europe no
longer consider themselves the lobbyists of the large companies.”
